History:

The beauty and splendor of a bygone era are still alive within the walls of the Historic Mizell House. This grand estate is the centerpiece set on five acres of lush gardens that date back to the home's construction in 1917 and is one of the last remaining houses built in Folkston. Home to William and Susie Mizell and their nine children (four boys, five girls) and host to many special occasions in their lifetime (many family weddings, christenings and even funerals).

The architect and builder are not known, but there is no doubt that Mr. Mizell furnished the best quality materials from his own sawmill. William and Susie had a large family who were all leaders in the development of the Charlton County area. Two of their daughters lived on the property until the last (Mrs. Helen) moved in 1994.

The City of Folkston acquired the property in 1995. Restorations began and slowly the Mizell House became the main location for community and special events.

Now privately owned, the Mizell House continues to contribute to the community by hosting grand events. Every event held on the estate not only celebrates individual and family occasions, but also the preservation of the legendary Mizell House and its historic gardens.
